A lower-back tattoo can grow into a wider back piece

A tramp stamp cover up tattoo already has a wide, flat canvas. Extending it upward or outward, with symmetrical florals, a mandala, or ornamental wings, puts the old lines in the darkest center. The new piece has to pass the left and right ends of the original.

Photograph the lower back from far enough away that the preview can show the extra width. A large piece is often more than one session. The artist sets that after seeing the whole area.
